New residents must register their vehicles and obtain Florida license tags upon establishing legal residency or by the day they begin work in Florida or by the time they register their children in school. Florida requires that after 90 days of legal residency, residents' vehicles must be covered by PIP and property damage insurance. Proof of ownership and valid Florida insurance, previous out-of-state title or registration as well as a vehicle identification number and odometer reading are required.

A driver's license is required of any driver who becomes a resident of Florida, is employed in Florida or registers a child in a Florida public school. When moving from out of state and applying for a driver's license, bring your out-of-state driver's license and Page 3 your Florida vehicle registration. New residents need to pass only a visual examination if they have a valid driver's license from another state.

Seat Belt Laws

Florida law requires all front seat occupants in cars, pickup trucks and vans operating on Florida roads be buckled up. All children under 6 years of age must be buckled up no matter where they ride in the vehicle. Children through the age of 3 must be secured by a federally-approved child restraint seat. Children 4 through 5 must be secured by a federally-approved child restraint seat or a safety belt.

Students attending local public schools for the first time should present the following when registering:

  • Two documents showing proof of residence (such as an electric bill, telephone bill or voter registration card) and the child's Social Security number.
  • A Certification of Immunization (HRS Form 680) which is available from private physicians or the local Public Health Department.
  • Proof of a medical examination during the past 12 months.
